title="Tanzania" href="http://www.safariguideafrica.com/tanzanian-vacations.php">Welcome to Tanzania, a diverse land, alive with colour and history that demands attention. Tanzania combines everything into one country. It is wild and exotic and alluring. Within the space of a few hours, you can explore golden beaches and moss covered ruins, or climb mountain slopes and trek through a barren landscape with the famed Massai as your guide. However, no trip to Tanzania is complete without a visit to the Kolo Kondoa Rock Art Site.

The excursion is an absolute must for travellers wishing to experience the start of Tanzania’s history. Some paintings date back over 2000 years ago, while some of the newer paintings are recent additions, a mere 200 years old. Archaeologists believe that the paintings have been created by the ancestors of the modern day Hadzabe and Sanawe tribes. The rudimentary works of art were cleverly painted in rock overhangs that protect it from the forces of nature. Sites are still in use by the local tribes in rainmaking and healing rituals.

The paintings depict anything from normal life 2000 years ago, to scenes more obscure and often strange. Human and animal figures can be seen all over the sites, and the animals, including giraffe, elephant, kudu and zebra are depicted with great accuracy and detail. Some stranger paintings show elongated human figures with excessive large heads and elaborate hairstyle in a variety of positions. One scene shows a masked man abducting a woman from her tribe.

Kolo Kondoa is roughly 300 km southwest of Arusha between a trip to Tarangire and Lake Manyara or Lake Eyasi. Combined tours are available with a visit to the Rock Art site and a Hadzabe cultural tour in Lake Eyasi. There are no tourist class hotels south of Tarangire and Lake Eyasi, so if you wish to spend time at the site, I hope you like camping. The facilities are extremely basic, with dry toilet facilities, but at least you can enjoy a shower. Kondoa offer “weekend safaris” which includes transport from the shelters to the site, site fees, tent lodgings and food. Drinking water and beverages of any kind are not included, and you need to provide your own bedding. Like I said, basic – but well worth the trip, and the experience. You are in Africa now, so some roughing it is required.

Kondoa do cater for groups, and it is an excellent spot for bicycle tours and walking safaris. Let Safari Guide Africa help add this to an itinerary.

PEMBA ISLAND – TANZANIA

Articles

Pemba Island is Tanzania’s best kept secret. Allow me to explain. Pemba has been separated from mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar for many decades. The result? A pristine, untouched and unspoiled island paradise of great beauty and fertility. It is the poster island for an exotic getaway. This little island is really off the beaten track, receiving a mere 1% of the traffic of Zanzibar, Pemba’s brother island.

On an island home to a population of 300 000 people, there are never more than a hand full of tourists at any given time. Travelers who do venture out this way are treated to a true and honest Swahili experience. You will feel as you are mapping out uncharted territory. Villagers are always eager, even excited, to talk to any stranger passing by. Do be surprised if you find yourself persuaded by stall keepers to sit down and enjoy some of the very unique local fruits. They so love to watch the reaction on travelers faces when they sample the wares.

Pemba is still the predominant global supplier of cloves, yielding a whopping 70 % of the entire world’s supply. However, the island only moved towards the tourist industry more recently, playing the traditional role of an island paradise. The island is quite a bit smaller than Zanzibar, but boasts a hillier landscape. It was known to sailors in ancient times as “El Huthera” literally meaning “The Green” The description is accurate enough, but does not do it justice. Because the island is close to the equator, it receives good rainfall, keeping it green all year round. Heavy rain falls between late April and early June, with light rain through October and November. Brief showers are relieved by long stretches of sunshine.

The entire area is a smorgasbord of lush green forests, swamps, mangroves, hidden coves, sandy white beaches and lagoons, with deep ocean drop offs, ideal for any scuba or snorkeling enthusiast. If you consider yourself a treasure hunter or adventurer, the island is scattered with ruins of Mosques and tombs, reclaimed by the forest, and dating back to the 17th century. During the clove blooming season, you can indulge your senses in this natural fragrant display and the songs of honey bees going about their business.

In the 17th century, Pemba caught the attention of the Sultan of Muscat (Oman in modern times) He was so taken by the spices islands and routes, that he seized Pemba for himself and installed himself as ruler, until the Western Colonial powers came to East Africa. To this day, the Arab Dhow boats play an important role in the history and culture of the island. They still sail from Kenya to Mozambique to do trade when the winds are favorable.

Be prepared when planning a trip to Pemba. Because the island is still very rural and lacking infrastructure, travelers must be prepared to rough it, making do with only the very basic facilities, unless you are staying in one of the very few luxury lodges. Accommodation is a bit thin; the only guest houses on the island can be found at Mkoani- the main sea port, Chake Chake- the main city of sorts, and Wete. Food must be bought locally at markets if you are not eating at a guest house or lodge.

Getting to the island is hassle free with regular flights from Zanzibar. All main air carriers fly directly to Tanzania and Zanzibar. You do require a visa to travel to Pemba, Tanzania and Kenya, but visas can be bought at all the entry points. Expect to pay roughly 50 US dollars per visa. The best part perhaps, is we can help put together an amazing Pemba vacation.

NAMIBIA SAFARI LODGES

Articles

Mosquitoes are pesky annoying blood suckers at their best. Laying awake on a hot summer night listening to their insistent droning is bad enough, so you need not add any further inconvenience to the equation. The thought of being infected by a malaria carrying mosquito is enough to put anyone off a safari.

There are many myths and misconceptions surrounding malaria, so lets lay some of your concerns to rest. Certain parts of South Africa are high risk malaria zones, that much is true. Luckily, there is a silver lining. Very few areas are high risk, and there are loads of fantastic reserves where you can enjoy the peace of mind of a malaria free safari. You especially want to consider a malaria free zone if you will be travelling with children and young ones, since contracting malaria will affect them the worst. Most malaria free game reserves are also very child friendly. As an added bonus, you do not have to be concerned with the hassle of taking malaria prophylactics.

South Africa can offer you three prominent locations, spread over the map, for a malaria free, child friendly African experience. These areas and reserves will offer you a world class safari while promising you complete peace of mind. Many of the lodges on the reserves are child friendly with comprehensive children programs.

Eastern Cape

Madikwe Game Reserve is a good choice for travelers coming through Johannesburg. The reserve is on the border of Botswana in the North West Province, located about 3.5 hours drive outside of Johannesburg and Pretoria. Covering 75 000 hectare, it is one of South Africa’s largest nature reserves, being home to 66 species of mammals and 300 birds species. The entire area is enclosed in a 150 kilometer perimeter fence, keeping the animals and large predators from running wild. Madikwe is bordered by the large, rugged oldest mountain range in the word, while the expanses of plains and open woodland stretch endlessly. The area is within the transition region between the Lowveld Bush and the Kalahari Thorn Fields, resulting both in a malaria free trip, and a very diverse eco system.

Madikwe is one of the only reserves proclaimed on the grounds of being the most sustainable land. Reclaiming and maintaining the reserve is a joint venture between the state, local communities and the private sector. Offering 11 lodges in total, the reserve is a perfect family destination, as many of the lodges welcome children, and cater to their needs with an extensive range of activities. Game drives are conducted twice a day, at dawn and dusk, and private bush walks can also be arranged.

Waterberg Wilderness Nature Reserve

Waterberg in known asSouth Africa’s best kept secret. The mountain range is located in the Limpopo Province, further north towards Zimbabwe. However, with its multitudes of streams, waterfalls and swamps, the reserve stretches well over 150 kilometers towards Potgietersrus in the East. This entire area is a malaria free zone.

Due to the rugged nature of the terrain, a 4 x 4 vehicle is highly recommended getting there, necessitating terrain vehicle hire for travelers from abroad. In some areas, these vehicles are essential. The reserve itself offers breathtaking views over the rolling hills and valleys and the deep gorges, boasting natural streams and pools. Waterberg is a natural reserve, with the objective on conserving the species within. 250 species of birds made this their home. Game viewing in large numbers is not uncommon, as the mountainous terrain offers an excellent vantage point.

The reserve is best suited for travellers wishing to self-plan their inventory and trip as they go along. Game drives are essentially executed in your own 4 x 4 vehicles, even though guided walks and game drives can be arranged with prior notice. Accommodation is available in the reserve, but can only accommodate twelve guests at a time in safari tents. Supplies can not be purchased on the reserve, and all the safari tents are self catering, as well as solar powered. However, accommodation can be booked outside of the reserve as well at one of the many farms and B&B’s scattered along the route.

Mountain bike trails and beautiful walks will be right up your alley if you are active by nature. As a word of caution though, the area is also the habitat of a very large number of reptiles, including the lethal Black Mamba, so tread carefully, and do not under any circumstances wander of the guided trails.<br

Archaeologists found proof in the Nelson’ Bay and Maties River Caves that Middle Stone Age men inhabited these caves for over 100 000 years! The caves are still being excavated, but are open to the public.

More recently though, the bay was discovered by a Portuguese explorer Manuel da Perestrello, who named it “Bahia Formosa” or rather, Bay Beautiful. However, it wasn’t until 1778 when the Bay got its name. Named after Governor Joachim van Plettenberg, who incorporated the bay under the Dutch East India Trading Company, the bay was primarily used only as a shipping port. The first settlers were farmers and frontiersmen, and the East Indian influence can still be seen in the architecture today

Climate

The area has a mild to Mediterranean climate throughout the year, Temperature does not fluctuate much, but winter months can be chilly due to the seasonal winter rains. />
Tsala lodge has a fantastically rich history, and the locals will not be shy to share the Ledged of Tsala with you. Eons ago, the people of the North were hungry and thirsty, the land not providing for them. Scribes wrote of a wonderful place rich in water and plant life with gentle rainfall and purple mountains. The people moved to the Promised Land, and found the entrance to paradise, just as the scribe had promised. Here they had build their village from stone and wood, planted vineyards and lived in abundance.

What happened to these people of old will never be known to us, but years later, ruins of the sacred village was discovered. The area was restored back to its former glory. This is Tsala, the place of abundance and laughter, where wine flows once again.

The traditional inspiration can be clearly seen in layout and decorations of the lodge. A handmade mud chandelier brought to life by crystals is the focal point of Zinzi restaurant. Here you can enjoy tasty food either in or outdoors. The lodge has their own wine cellar, so you can hand pick the bottle of your choice.

During the day, picnics can be arranged. Your picnic can by anything you want it to be.
